Fish use of restored mangroves matches that in natural mangroves regardless of forest age

چکیده

The loss and degradation of mangrove forests have triggered global restoration efforts to support biodiversity ecosystem services, including fish stock enhancement. As accelerates, it is important evaluate outcomes for species that play functional roles in ecosystems yet this remains a clear knowledge gap. There remarkably little information, example, about how use mangroves varies as restored vegetation matures, hampering include fisheries benefits natural capital assessments restoration. We used unbaited underwater cameras within two distinct zones forests—fringe interior—at five pairs restored-natural sites increasing age from southeast Queensland, Australia. deep learning automatically extract data the four most common species: yellowfin bream (Acanthopagrus australis), sea mullet (Mugil cephalus), toadfish (Tetractenos hamiltoni), silverbiddy (Gerres subfasciatus). abundance these varied among zones, but was equal or greater compared paired sites. Despite younger having dramatically lower structural complexity, abundances did not increase with site maturity. Furthermore, while were more abundant fringe zone, we observed similarities interior across all Our paired, space-for-time design provides powerful test fish, highlighting even newly immature are readily utilized by key species.

Salt balance in mangroves.

The tidal zone of tropical seas is frequently lined with great mangrove forests, the dominating species of which belong to such genera as Rhizophora, Bruguiera, Sonneratia, and Avicennia. The outstanding feature of these plants is their adaptation to growing in seawater, and even though all do well in river estuaries they seldom penetrate inland beyond the direct action of ocean tides. A questi...

A Social Assessment of Forest Degradation in the “Cacheu Mangroves Natural Park”, Guinea-Bissau

The Cacheu Mangroves Natural Park (PNTC) was established in the year 2000 with the objective of protecting the coastal forests of Northern Guinea-Bissau, which have been subject to deforestation and are at risk. Concomitantly, the need to find sustainable financial revenues to support forest conservation motivated the development of projects that explore avoidance of deforestation and forest de...

Distribution of fish in seagrass, mangroves and coral reefs: life-stage dependent habitat use in Honduras.

Many coral reef fish exhibit habitat partitioning throughout their lifetimes. Such patterns are evident in the Caribbean where research has been predominantly conducted in the Eastern region. This work addressed the paucity of data regarding Honduran reef fish distribution in three habitat types (seagrass, mangroves, and coral reefs), by surveying fish on the islands of Utila and Cayos Cochinos...

How Mangroves Salinize the Soil How Mangroves Salinize the Soil

A transient one-dimensional model of the vertical movement of water and salt in the mangrove root zone is investigated. This is an extension of a previous steady state model which assumed that the ability of the mangrove roots to take up water is uniformly distributed throughout the soil and that the root water uptake is reduced if there is nonzero salt concentration around the roots. We show h...
